Marley Spoon is a meal kit delivery program that partners with domestic lifestyle guru Martha Stewart to deliver ingredients and recipes for meals based on her recipes and cooking techniques. The company was founded in 2014 but started the partnership with Martha Stewart in 2016. The partnership has offered the company great exposure and allowed it to grow year after year.
Besides Martha Stewart fans, Marley Spoon is for anyone looking for an easy and efficient dinner solution. Marley Spoon offers 40 different recipes each week so there’s something for everyone. You can filter the options by Vegetarian & Vegan, Meat & Fish, Health & Diet, Under 30 Minutes or Family-Friendly.
Here are a few meals that we enjoyed.
Pan-seared chicken breasts in a garlic-lime sauce served with crispy oven fries and a spinach salad.
Fresh salmon in a flavored with dill and lemon and paired with charred green beans and a garlicy quinoa side dish.
Sliced steak coated with a delicious spice rub served on a bed of romaine lettuce and topped with crispy onion rings.
Some of the Marley Spoon meals were good and others were just ok. We enjoyed the HelloFresh meals more than Marley Spoon. To be honest I was a little disappointed and expected more for something with the Martha Stewart name on it.
There are recipes with prep-times as low as 10-15 minutes and others of up to 50 minutes. If you’re looking for a quick dinner solution, you could filter to select just the quick and easy meals.
Marley Spoon, like all meal kit programs, will save you time. Think about how much time it takes to look through cookbooks, figure out what ingredients you have already, make a grocery list and look for ingredients at the store. With Marley Spoon the perfect amount of each ingredient is delivered to your door along with a recipe card.
All of the recipes are broken down into six easy steps with photos to illustrate. You just pull the pre-measured ingredients out of the fridge and get started. Most recipes begin with chopping up the vegetables followed by fairly simple cooking techniques.
Marley Spoon charges a flat $8.99 shipping rate (as of the writing of this review). You schedule your preferred delivery day when you sign up. The delivery day can be changed any time before their order deadline, however. The boxes are shipped via overnight services such as FedEx or UPS.
They ship to most of the contiguous United States.
They use ice packs and insulated liners to keep the food cool. The meats and larger produce items were loose in the box. Smaller items were in paper bags.
My box was shipped in their “thermal liner” which, according to their website is curbside recyclable. The contents of the ice pack are not recyclable, but if you thaw it and dump the contents into the trash, the plastic bag that it is in is recyclable (if #4 plastic bags are recyclable in your area).
When you sign up, you select from Vegetarian & Vegan, Meat & Fish, Health & Diet, Under 30 Minutes or Family-Friendly options.
You could lose weight by selecting meals from the “Health & Diet” category. When you select your meals online, you can click to see the nutrition information and only select meals that are within whatever calorie parameters you are looking for.
Again, it can be healthy especially if you select the “Health & Diet” category. Other meal kit programs cater more to healthy eaters, however. Marley Spoon is meant to be more for the standard diet.
Ordering from Marley Spoon is easy. After entering in your name, address and other basic information, you select how many meals a week you would like and how many servings of each meal. You also select your meal preference options (Vegetarian & Vegan, Meat & Fish, Health & Diet, Under 30 Minutes and/or Family-Friendly). They will automatically select meals based on your preferences each week. You can go with the meals that they select or look at all the choices and select your own.
The price depends on how many meals a week and how many servings you order. The four-person plans start at $8.49 per serving, and the two-person plans start at $9.49 per serving. We ordered the four-person three-meal plan for $9.49 per serving. Pricing may have changed since the time of my review.
If the alterative is eating out, it will definitely save you money. If the alternative is doing your own planning, shopping and cooking, it may or may not save you money, but it will definitely save you time (and what is your time worth?). Some people save money because meal kit programs help with food waste. You only pay for what you need. You don’t have to buy a big bottle of something if you only need a teaspoon.
