Mosaic is a meal kit service started in 2018 by two friends who were trying to provide a solution for busy people who want to eat heathy. They discovered that fewer than 10% of Americans eat the recommended daily intake of vegetables and wondered what they could do to help people eat healthier. Chopping up veggies and prepping food can be so time-consuming that people tend to fall back on fast food or other less healthy options.
They got to work in the kitchen and came up with recipes that were healthy and super-convenient. Most of their food is ready-made. You just take it out of the freezer and microwave it. They not only offer dinner and lunch options, but also breakfast items and smoothies.
Mosaic is great for busy people who want to eat healthy. If you don’t have time to cook and are looking to increase your veggie intake, they’re the service for you. They offer mostly single-serving meals, but they also have family-size meals. Their service is great for single people because of the many single-serving options. It could also be good option for people looking for something healthy to take to work for lunch. You could microwave the single-serving meals at work.
Here are a few items that we ordered.
A curry and chickpea stew with pumpkin, ginger, cauliflower, cilantro and tomato, served over lentils and brown rice
A broth of ginger, turmeric and lemon with quinoa, chickpeas, spinach and sweet potatoes
A green juice with pineapple, banana, and yuzu (an Asian lemon)
Overall, the taste was sort of disappointing. Some foods were pretty good, but some were not so good. If you’re looking for a convenient healthy meal, however, maybe your focus is more on getting your veggies that eating a fabulous-tasting food. Since all of the foods are frozen, they lack the crispness of eating fresh vegetables.
Mosaic meals are fast and easy. You just take them out of the freezer and microwave them. There’s basically no prep involved.
Mosaic will definitely save you time because there is no prep. You don’t need to spend time cutting vegetables and cooking on the stove because the meals are already prepared for you. In addition, you save the time by not having to plan meals or go grocery shopping. Also, cleanup is a snap because you just throw away the box after microwaving.
Mosaic is super easy. You don’t have to worry about complicated cooking techniques or anything because everything is prepared for you. Mosaic is great for the non-cooker, the person who doesn’t enjoy cooking or doesn’t have time to cook.
Mosaic is offering free shipping if you buy 12 or more items (at the time of writing this article). This is nice because most meal kit delivery services charge for shipping.
According to their website, they deliver to most major metro areas in the Eastern and Western United States. I live in a smallish city in California, and they delivered to me. You can check if they are available in your area at https://www.mosaicfoods.com/pages/check-availability
Mosaic is the most environmentally friendly of the meal kit programs that I’ve tried so far. They say that 100% of their packaging is curbside recyclable or made with post-consumer recycled fiber. They even use dry ice instead of a frozen gel-pack. You just put the dry ice in the sink and let it melt away. Of course, dry ice needs to be handled with gloves because of its extremely low temperature.
Check with your local recycler, but Mosaic claims to use only curbside recyclable packaging or post-consumer recycled fiber.
When you order, you can select one or more of the following dietary options, and it will filter out meals that don’t meet your needs.
Mosaic’s focus is more on getting people to eat healthier and increase their vegetable intake. Of course, a side benefit of that may be that you might lose weight if you weren’t eating so healthy before.
Mosaic’s mission is to put good food on every table. Their whole purpose is to get people to eat heathier by removing the obstacle of having to invest time into meal prep.
Ordering from Mosaic is easy. First select how many items you want to receive. You can select that you want to receive 6, 12 or 18 items. Remember that shipping is free if you select at least 12 items. Next select how often you want to get a shipment. The frequency options are every week, 2 weeks, 3 weeks or 4 weeks.
Mosaic is not cheap. Remember that the foods are mostly organic and ready-made. That costs money. If you are looking to save time and eat healthy, it may be worth it to you though. The price of the items depends on what you order. Here are the prices. Pricing may have changed since the time of my review.
Mosaic will save you money if the alternative is eating similar quality food out. If the alternative is you cooking, it may or may not save you money. It may save you money partially because there will not be food waste. You only pay for what you will eat. You don’t have to worry about buying a large container of an ingredient if you need just a small amount.
