Gobble is a meal kit program that claims that their meals have a 15-minute dinner prep time. They say that they do the prep work like peeling, chopping and marinading to save you time. The sauces are generally pre-prepared and come in a pouch. Grains are often pre-cooked and shrink wrapped. The meat even comes already cut into cubes for some recipes.
Gobble is best for busy people with limited time to cook. The 15-minute prep time will be a lifesaver when you get home from a long day at work and have to quickly get dinner on the table. The meals appeal to a broad range of tastes but tend to be more gourmet than child friendly.
Here are some of the meals that we received from Gobble.
Pan-roasted pork tenderloin served with roasted Brussel sprouts and a Peruvian dipping sauce
Pan-seared salmon encrusted with a delicious spice mix, served with a quinoa and arugula salad
Tenderloins served on a bed of shaved Brussel sprouts and topped with a honey mustard vinaigrette, dried cherries, goat cheese and hazelnuts
The meals were good, but not as good as HelloFresh and Green Chef. I would say that it was good, but not great. The ingredients were fresh, and I appreciated the wide variety of veggies. I enjoyed trying the less common ethnic foods that they offered like Peruvian and Tunisian. It’s a great way to explore a little outside of your food comfort zone.
Supposedly they all have a 15-minute or less prep time. I took longer than that, but maybe I’m slow. I probably could have done 15 minutes if you had set a stopwatch and challenged me, but I wasn’t in a hurry so I took my time.
Gobble will definitely save you time both from not having to plan meals and grocery shop and also from the pre-prepped ingredients that come with their meals.
Gobble meals are easy to make, but I dispute their claim that ingredients come pre-prepped. It is true that the sauces come pre-prepared in a pouch, but you do have to chop veggies. Also, the “cubed” chicken was in pretty big chunks so I ended up cutting it up smaller. Regardless, the prep is minimal, and the recipes are simple. The recipe cards have easy-to-follow directions and pictures of each of the steps. All of the recipes had six steps or less.
New customers currently receive free shipping on their first box. The following weeks have a $8.99 shipping fee.
Gobble is available in most states. They delivery to the contiguous United States except for Montana. They have limited service in Nebraska, New Mexico, Kansas, Missouri, Iowa, Wisconsin, Michigan, North Dakota, South Dakota, and Louisiana.
The meal kits come in a big cardboard box. The box had ice packs and plastic bubble wrap-like insulation to keep the food cold. The meat was packed close to the ice block and the other ingredients were in plastic bags. Each two-person meal kit comes in a plastic bag. If you order for four people, as I did, you will get two 2-person kits for each meal. Unfortunately, it’s a lot of unnecessary plastic packaging.
The cardboard box is curbside recyclable. The gel inside of the ice pack is not recyclable or compostable although the plastic cover on it technically is (although it is not curbside recyclable in my area). The insulated liner is technically recyclable, but it is not curbside recyclable in my area. The plastic bags are also not curbside recyclable in my area although you can generally drop plastic bags off for recycling in stores like Target.
The Lean and Clean dinners can help you lose weight by providing low-carb meals of 650 calories or less. The calorie count is printed on the card as well as the calorie count of each of the ingredients. That way you can omit an ingredient if you feel that it has too many calories.
Most of the classic dinners are between 700-900 calories and the Lean & Clean dinners are low in carbs and have only 650 calories or less. The Lean and Clean meals feature lean proteins and healthy fats that are rich in omega-3s. The meal kits include a wide variety of vegetables, and some include whole grains.
Ordering from Gobble is easy. You select your dietary preference (Classic, Lean & Clean, or Vegetarian). Also, select how many people will be eating (servings), and how many meals a week you would like to receive. Enter your delivery and payment information, and you’re done. The system will automatically select meals for you based on your preferences. If you want to select your own meals, however, you can change their selections on their website.
The price depends on how many meals you order. In general, the more meals you order, the cheaper it is. Here is the current pricing as of the writing of this article.
Gobble can save you money if the alternative is eating out. It may even save you money over buying the ingredients and cooking by eliminating food waste. You only get what you’re going to use in the recipe. There are cheaper meal kit programs than Gobble, however, such as HelloFresh.
